My way of passing time, is not always understood

Drawing has always been my constant way of understanding the world

A Poetic Sensibility: Those paintings, and drawings, which most fully express the spiritual world, the soul of humanity, a sense of the Divine. I have never been able to shake off my childhood conviction that this world is a world of magic and wonder, and our existence here on this planet, and the existence of the universe itself, is somehow improbable, ultimately inexplicable and mysterious.

I can sit for hours making these drawings, I never run out of patience, and I am nearly always surprised at the results. Drawing this way is a form of meditation, not in the sense that it relaxes me, or, takes my troubles away; but in that when I draw I enter deeply into myself, and explore my interior life.

Some drawings are completed at speed, others take a little longer to arrive at a satisfactory result. I never know where my wanderings will lead me, and I try to stay open to all possibilities; there is a critic that lives somewhere inside my head, and is always intervening to censor what I am drawing; and I am sure it is right to set some limits on my activity. In the end my work is the outcome of the person I am, the things I have learnt throughout life, my bad angels, and my good angels.

I have found the longer you work on a bad drawing, and do not give up, the better the drawing you accomplish in the end. This is my true experience, I am not the best or most skilled of draughtsmen, drawing has always been a struggle and a pleasure for me. My only virtue over the years has been that I am resilient and never give up.

The imagery I use in my paintings, develops in drawings which in their initial stages are made from the simplest of elements: from point to line, triangle, square, and circle... I tend to work in drawing books, and complete a series of images before starting to paint. The images are obtained by a process of automatic drawing, (taking a line for a walk!) and after completing a number of these drawings, a theme, and a subject-matter emerges and begins to impose itself, more and more, onto the white of the paper.

This image reminds me of the numerous times I have walked into a sculptor’s work shop to find a plaster sculpture of a head and shoulders resting on a platform, waiting for the sculptor to enter and resume his/her work.

To draw a graffito is an excuse and a liberation, it is what all artists most envy and admire in children’s artwork, and the evidence of what our education has robbed us of. We must not be too dismissive of all that we have learned since childhood, however we do require to attain some perspective.
